The first sip of Sancerre while traveling in France was all it took to fall in love with the region and the magnificent wines of Domaine Vacheron. The ability to taste the terroir so clearly when trying different single vineyard wines is enough to convert anyone, even those who are not fans of Sauvignon Blanc. Domaine Vacheron, which is now run by cousins Jean-Dominique and Jean-Laurent Vacheron, is a highlight of the Sancerre region, according to the Wine Advocate. The winery produced Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from some of the best sites in the appellation and has been farming biodynamically since 2005. The Wine Advocate also notes that the cousins “demonstrate that the Sancerrois is no less fascinating than the producers of Côte d’Or.”

Vacheron, oh boy, where do I even begin? This winery is the epitome of excellence when it comes to producing some of the finest wines in the Loire Valley. They’ve been around for over a century and their expertise in crafting terroir-driven wines is unparalleled.
The estate is run by cousins Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron, who are the fourth generation of winemakers in their family. They have earned a reputation as one of the best producers of red and white Sancerre, with a focus on terroir-driven single vineyard wines. They have bought land in the best parcels, converted to full organic and biodynamic farming, and employed painstaking methods on their wines. They even age one terroir-based cuvée in barrels sourced from Domaine Romanée Conti.
Domaine Vacheron has recently razed 10 houses in the centre of Sancerre to make a multi-million euro winery measuring one hectare in size. This expansion is part of their ambition to continue to produce high-quality wines in Sancerre and to keep winemaking at the heart of the town. The estate has stepped up its game under the leadership of Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique, who have acquired vines in the most highly-coveted lieu-dits of the region, removed all synthetic material from the viticulture and winemaking process, farmed organically and biodynamically since 1999, used only homemade compost and brews, picked everything by hand, and dramatically reduced yields.
