Founded in 1890, it is one of the most prestigious wineries in the world. It all started when five quality-conscious Riojan and Basque families founded the “Sociedad Vinícola de La Rioja Alta” in Haro, the regional capital of Rioja. France’s vineyards were devastated by phylloxera at the time, so merchants had to look abroad for high-quality wines. Nearby Spain, especially the Rioja region’s excellent terroir and climate, was the way to go. French masters, local growers, and a long-lasting cooperage tradition created Rioja’s legend.
The wines are made based on Rioja’s tradition. Extended aging in American oak casks gives wines distinct style and identity. Although a lot of nearby producers are nowadays in favor of French oak, La Rioja Alta is committed to tradition. Despite the varying amount of time in cask and bottle, the wines all display an excellent rich ruby color and lovely aromas of oak, spices, and fruit, followed by a spectacular feel on the palate. Wonderful smooth texture, clean and rich flavors, and a long lingering finish. All the wines are ready for consumption on release but will keep for many more years in bottle. This situation is almost unique in the world of wine and is why so many restaurants list La Rioja Alta’s outstanding range of truly classic Rioja wines.
The company owns 300ha of vineyards in the Rioja Alta region, and Tempranillo is the dominant variety. With more than 50,000 casks and 6.4 million bottles stored at any one time, the equivalent of about eight years of sales, La Rioja Alta S.A. is unique in its ability to supply large quantities of fully mature wines of world-class quality.
